A Wheel and Away

Simmons Park

Okehampton, Devon, England

Public park in the market town of Okehampton, just on the edge of Dartmoor National Park.   The park was given to the people of Okehampton in 1907 by a generous benefactor called Sidney Simmons.  It has been beautifully laid out and landscaped and even boasts a Swiss Chalet.  The park consists of a meadow and woods with the East Okement river running through it.

There is also a large green space used for dog walking and general recreation, two children’s playgrounds, a bowling green and a leisure centre.

Popular with local dog walkers, families and more the park offers a lovely place to relax.

General accessibility information

The park has excellent access for wheelchair users.  At the main entrance there is a very small cobbled slope up to the gate after which it is a flat, wide,  armac path all the way round.  There are some small bridges across the river to the other side but they are all step free and around four foot wide so sufficient room to get a wheelchair across comfortably.  There are steps up to some areas of the park but most parts are completely accessible.

Disabled toilet facilities

Come out of the park and on the opposite side of the road there are toilet facilities, including disabled ones.
