Bake Swedish flatbread
Mjälloms Tunnbrod, Mjällom, The High Coast, Sweden
In the small village of Mjällom, Sweden, sits Sweden’s oldest flatbread bakery. Established in 1923 and originating from Grandma Rut selling her homemade bread to local workers, the bakery now has its own factory and ships to many other countries, including throughout the Nordics.. It has also won numerous awards in the process. Yet it still follows the same recipe used for generations of the family.
The bakery has a range of different flatbreads available to purchase, each with their own distinctive flavour and texture. Visitors can sample the many on offer from wheat to rye to sweet potato plus more.
As well as flatbread, visitors can try many other delicacies, both local and from further afield. Cheese, oils, local vinegars and marmalades, Icelandic salt to name just a few.
When you are done with browsing, take some time to enjoy the delicious meals served in the onsite restaurant. Everything is seasonal and of high quality, whether you are after a light snack or to sample the more extensive five course tasting menu.
In addition, the bakery also offers the option to have a go yourself, with its specially designed baking cabin next door. With the help of an experienced baker, visitors can make their own flatbread and cook them in the onsite oven before having a memento from the day to take home – it gets that far and isn’t eaten on the way!
The bakery also acts as a tourist information point for things to do and places to visit during a stay in the High Coast region.
The shop and restaurant are all fully accessible with the option to sit inside or out. Unfortunately, there are a few steps to access the bakery cabin so this could be difficult for someone with limited mobility.
