Point Park, Chattanooga, Tennessee

Point Park is a memorial park high up and overlooking both Chattanooga and the Lookout Mountain battlefield.  Here was fought one of the key battles in the American Civil War. which came to be known as the’Battle Above The Clouds’, in 1963.

Inside the park, visitors will be able to see the New York Peace Memorial, which acts a as a tribute to the Union and Confederate soldiers and serves to remind of the power of peace and reconciliation.  Also inside the park is the Ochs Museum and Observatory.  This houses a number of exhibits around Civil War signalling along with many photographs.

There are also many other monuments and signage as well as cannons signifying Confederate artillery position.  These all help to give the visitor a much clearer picture of the history.

The views are spectacular, looking out for miles over Chattanooga and beyond.

There is also a visitor centre located just outside the main entrance which has more information about the American Civil War and the part played by this site.  This also includes a famous pairing depicting ‘The Battle Above The Clouds’.

General accessibility information

There is a path which runs around the park – it is paved and so affords access to most of it.  The Ochs Museum and Observatory is not wheelchair accessible, however.  There are many benches positioned along the route, should one need to stop, take a rest and admire the stunning views.

The park is pet friendly, so assistance dogs are permitted.

There is parking just behind the visitors centre, very close to the park.

The visitors centre is fully wheelchair accessible, with accessible toilets.
