Ghibli transmission jerks when downshifting into second. Is this a software thing or am I looking at a mechatronic unit?
I picked up a 2015 Maserati Ghibli SQ4 a few months ago and for the most part it’s been a joy to drive but there’s this one thing that’s starting to really bug me. When I’m coming to a gentle stop or slowing down for a roundabout the downshift from third to second is noticeably harsh, like a little kick in the back that you can definitely feel and it’s not smooth at all. Upshifts are fine, cruising on the highway is buttery, it’s literally just that one specific downshift that feels like the transmission is annoyed about having to do its job. I’ve read some forum posts where people say a simple TCU software update at the dealer fixed it, and others where they ended up needing a new mechatronic unit or a full valve body rebuild. I’m trying to find a proper Maserati Transmission Expert Sharjah who actually knows these ZF 8HP units and won’t just shrug and tell me to live with it or quote me a new gearbox. Has anyone else with a Ghibli or Quattroporte dealt with that clunky 3-2 downshift and managed to get it sorted without selling a kidney? Just want to know if it’s worth booking it in for a diagnostic or if this is just part of the Italian charm I need to accept.
